The Things They Carried
The main
character of the story is Jimmy Cross. Cross is from a college in New Jersey,
Cross is also the leader of his platoon. So far he is not doing such a good job
at it though, one of his men are already dead Ted Lavender. At first he is
distracted if Martha is a virgin or not then when he is sitting at his fox hole
it hits him and he starts to cry. From then on he will try to prevent any
deaths in his platoon any way possible. in this story you can already see the
different kinds of people that are in war. This way is characterized by the way
they view life and it reflects them in what they carry. For example Jimmy
carriers on two pictures of Martha and a couple letter that she sent him, while
others carry drugs to not be so nervous in the combat zone, or a bible because
they believe that god will get them through this war. Then of course they have
their weapons like m16 and their food rations. This then began to make me think
of what I would carry out onto the battlefield if I were in their shoes. I thought
would I know what to bring right of the bat or would it change over the course
of me being in combat. I gave it a lot of thought and what I came up with was
that I would bring an mp3 player. For me music helps in any situation. If I needs
to sleep; listen to music, if I need to focus; music, if I need to calm down;
music. Basically I couldn’t live without it so that’s why I would bring it.
That is a good thing to bring. Something to calm and soothe you down. But not all people brought drugs. One of them brought the New Testament with him. Some people bring things with value. Something important to them. Whether it was money or sentimental. In someway even if it was drugs it was something to get there mind off of the war and release there stress.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how much like zach you talked more about what they took with them to personally help them keep there mind at ease and help them move on in the war. i agree with you that what the author said the men brought really helps you understand what kind of person they are so we just dont view them all as just aonther G.I
ReplyDeleteThe real question I have for you guys is what would you bring if you were in the same position as them. I told what i would bring now i would like to know what you guys would bring. Whether it be something small like mine or big.
